In 1595, during an attempt to take Malta, he was killed. Near Turgutreis Town there is a statue of him.

Daily boat trips can be taken from Turgut Reis departing to Gumusluk, Karaincir, Akyarlar and Yalikavak.
Ferry services to the Greek Islands are available at the ferry port in Turgutreis marina. Within the marina is D Marin Beach Club/Restaurant and numerous eateries, designer shops and cafes.
